Since its debut in 2022, Spy x Family has created a global sensation, making the Forger family a new icon in the anime world.
However, behind that spotlight, many fans have begun to realize that the Single Spy and Family Choice, meaning the choice to focus too much on the single family's daily life instead of advancing the spy plot, has gradually made Spy x Family lose its initial appeal.
Spy x Family – Success from the very first episodes
Spy x Family made a strong impression with its compelling premise: Twilight, Westalis's top spy, is forced to create a fake family to carry out a crucial mission called Operation Strix. He adopts the identity of Loid Forger, adopts Anya, a girl with telepathic abilities, and marries Yor Briar – a cold-blooded assassin who hides her true identity by working as an ordinary civil servant.
The special point is that no one in this family knows the other's secret. This creates a series of humorous, tense, yet incredibly heartwarming situations. This is why Spy x Family quickly topped streaming charts and became a "national anime."

Single Spy and Family Choice: Safety limits breakthroughs
While still maintaining its charm, Spy x Family suffers from a major problem: the plot is almost stagnant. From season 1 to season 3, the series remains loyal to the slice-of-life motif revolving around the daily activities of the Forger family.
Loid and Yor have well-developed backstories, but their psychological development is constantly "reset" after each episode. Moments that seemed to open a turning point in their relationship quickly return to their original state, leaving audiences feeling no real progress.
Meanwhile, Anya is one of the few characters with more clear development, especially through her relationship with Damien Desmond. However, this pace of development is still too slow to create a major breakthrough for the entire story.

A popular anime cannot rely solely on the cuteness of its characters forever. The decrease in online forum interaction compared to season 1 is clear evidence that audiences need a stronger "push."
The choice between maintaining the image of a cold Single Spy or fully committing to a genuine Family Choice needs to be brought to a climax. If Loid doesn't truly confront his feelings, or Yor doesn't encounter a situation that forces her to reveal her assassin identity, the story will always be predictable loops.
How can Spy x Family regain its "hype"?
To regain its status as a masterpiece, the producers need to bravely break out of their comfort zone.
Operation Strix needs more dangerous variables, forcing the characters to reveal their true nature. Loid and Yor need to make real progress in their relationship instead of just stopping at humorous misunderstandings. Audiences need to feel worried about the fate of the Forger family, instead of knowing for sure that everything will be fine at the end of each episode.

Audiences don't need huge plot twists, but meaningful steps forward that aren't erased in the next episode. When characters are allowed to grow, Spy x Family will break out of its comfort zone and regain the sense of surprise that once captivated viewers.
The Single Spy and Family Choice is not entirely a mistake, but clinging to this choice for too long has caused Spy x Family to lose its momentum. If the series dares to change, dares to let its characters move forward, then regaining its status as a "national anime" is only a matter of time.
