Who is Denji in Chainsaw Man ? He is the main character in the famous comedy-horror manga series by author Tatsuki Fujimoto. The manga is set in a world full of demons that emerge from human fears.
Denji's dark past
The series begins with Denji calculating which part of his body he should sell to pay off his debt. No one knows who Denji's parents are, only that when he was just a kid, his father passed away and left behind a huge debt from the Yakuza. The initial debt was not too large, but the Yakuza took very high profits, so even though Denji worked hard until he was 16 years old, he still had no way to pay off the debt.

His life was not gloomy and without light, because he met Pochita while injured. Pochita is a saw demon in dog form. At first, he was extremely scared because he was afraid of being eaten, so he made a promise to it, vowing to help them both survive. And then Pochita lived with Denji and worked many different jobs with him to make a living and pay off debt.

Denji does everything to make money, he used to work as a wood sawyer, sell his own organs and even work as a shabby demon hunter. He used Pochita as a makeshift chainsaw. Denji uses most of his income to pay off his father's debt.
During a mission, the old creditor betrayed Denji and left him in a trash can. Pochita lay next to the severed pieces of Denji's body. In order to save him, the evil dog made a contract and became Denji's new heart, eventually Denji transformed into the Chainsaw Demon.
After merging with Pochita, the teenager pulled the string in his chest to release “Chainsaw Man” and massacre the old man and his army of zombies. After the battle, Makima – a high-ranking demon hunter of the Demon Hunting Bureau – arrived at the scene and gave him two options: be killed by her or become her pet. Denji was completely attracted by Makima's beauty and he also believed in full meals, so Denji chose to become a pet.

Demon Hunter Denji's personality
Because he had to "work hard to pay off debt" since he was young, Denji was not properly educated. It can be said that his mind is no different from that of a child. He never thinks and does whatever he likes, pursues extremely normal things and never plots anything. Many readers even feel that he is a rather "brainless" character.
Denji often does crazy crazy things. The only thing he cares about is probably just being able to... touch a girl's breasts. Denji is quite obedient to Makima - probably because she is always willing to pamper him.
Denji never thinks and does whatever he likes
Although often portrayed as having a naive and somewhat rude personality, this character is still understanding and sympathetic towards others. Thanks to that, Denji's relationships with colleagues in the Demon Hunting Department became stronger and stronger.

Denji will die if he does not fuse with Pochita
Previously, Denji had sold his organs to pay off debt even though he knew this was potentially dangerous for his health. If he doesn't combine with Pochita, his body will quickly deteriorate and will likely die young.
After Pochita became Denji's heart, his body was completely restored, including the parts that were sold. On his chest there is a wire similar to the part of a chainsaw. When pulling the rope, Denji will transform into a Chainsaw Demon with 2 chainsaw blades in both hands and 1 chainsaw blade in his head.

The reason other demons fear the Saw Demon
In demon form, all of Denji's stats increase significantly. He can use a saw to cut down opponents with ease. During battle, he can continuously heal if he has enough blood supply, even if the wound is fatal. The ability will later become even more powerful, to the point where Denji can regenerate his entire body from just his heart.
Most importantly, dead demons will be reborn in Hell, but this does not apply to demons "eaten" by the Chainsaw Demon because they will completely disappear. This ability has made the Chainsaw Demon feared by other demons.

Denji is "illiterate", cannot read Kanji
There are several scenes in the Chainsaw Man manga that show us that Denji cannot read or do basic calculations. However, this confused some people because they saw Makima's subordinate reading CoroCoro magazine with Power in Chapter 50.
The truth is that Japan follows three writing systems Hiragana (basic letters, for elementary school and kindergarten students), Katakana (used for borrowed words) and Kanji (Chinese characters and the most difficult alphabet ). CoroCoro is a children's magazine that uses Hiragana so Denji can read it.
Denji once made a cameo in My Hero Academia
If you pay close attention, you will see that Denji appeared in Chapter 259 of the My Hero Academia manga in his Saw Demon form. It's hard for fans to ignore the familiar chainsaw head and arm of "that person", isn't it?
Even though we don't know why our main character made a cameo in a different time period, it's still quite interesting when your favorite character appears in another manga, right?
