Demon Slayer: Who is Doma and what is the truth behind this demon?

by Hobiverse's Wibu on 29.08.2024 | Art Story

There are many demons in Kimetsu no Yaiba, but not all demons have much screen time for the audience to remember. That's why viewers are curious about Demon Slayer: Who is Doma ? This is a very contradictory demon with a ghostly half-smile. Let's find out more about Upper Moon Two with us.

Demon Slayer: Who is Doma?

Doma is a character in the series "Kimetsu no Yaiba" who was created with the original purpose of saving people, and even after becoming a demon, he still maintained this intention. However, the method that Doma chose to carry out his purpose was wrong and deviated. This makes him an extremely complex character, half good and half evil, where actions that are considered to have good intentions but cause negative consequences.

Doma is a character with many elements related to Buddhism from his personality to his character design. For example, his design has many similarities with the image of Tang Monk, a famous figure in Buddhist culture. In addition, Doma's Blood Demon Art and the place where he fights are also related to Buddhist symbols such as lotus flowers, lotus leaves and water lilies. Even Doma's sharp golden fan, a weapon, has a lotus motif, a familiar symbol in Buddhism.

Why is Doma so contradictory?

Doma saw death as a way to save humanity. He believed that eating his followers would free them from suffering and help them attain eternal happiness. This was a misunderstanding of enlightenment in Buddhism. However, Doma was extremely confident in his ultimate enlightenment and never doubted his actions, even though they seemed extremely cruel to others.

There are many opinions in the fandom about why Doma became a demon. One commonly cited reason is "boredom," but this has never been officially confirmed by the author. Instead, it is implied in the manga that Doma's reason for becoming a demon stemmed from the emptiness he felt in his life. When he was beheaded and faded away in chapter 163, Doma said that he had spent his entire life serving and saving humans, but in the end, human emotions were just a dream to Doma. That is, despite living for over 100 years, Doma still could not feel true human emotions.

Fanbook 2 reveals that Doma has special hobbies such as bathing in sake, smoking hookahs, and dancing. This proves that, despite being a demon, Doma still retains some human habits and hobbies. However, because he has become a demon, he cannot enjoy the delicious taste of sake as before.

Doma's Relationships

Regarding Doma's relationship with other characters, Muzan Kibutsuji does not really like Doma. Although Doma actively expressed his intention to serve Muzan, he was never given important missions. The other members of the Twelve Demon Moons also do not have good feelings towards Doma. The one who hates Doma the most is Akaza, the Upper Rank Three, because Doma surpassed him in the ranks of the Twelve Demon Moons. During the Upper Rank meeting, Akaza showed his tension and animosity towards Doma by attacking Doma.

On the side of the sect, there are not only women but also men. Doma never forced his followers to do anything, including searching for the Blue Spider Lily, even though he had absolute loyalty to Kibutsuji Muzan. Doma is the most worshiped demon by humans, and is also the only demon under Kibutsuji Muzan who always carries the concept of saving humanity even though his way of acting is completely wrong.

In Doma's sect, he teaches his followers, "Live happily with a peaceful mind. There is no need to do anything difficult or painful." Doma has about 250 followers, and he always tries to stay inconspicuous to avoid being noticed. This is revealed in the official Fanbook 1. Also, when asked why he eats more women, Doma replied that women have more nutrients than men. Although Doma thinks he is a good friend to everyone, he obviously doesn't know that the people around him don't feel that way.

Doma likes Kochou Shinobu?

One of the most remarkable moments in Doma's life was when he was reunited with the Insect Hashira Kochou Shinobu, whom he had killed and absorbed into his body. It was the first time Doma felt his heart beat faster and his cheeks flushed red. He invited Shinobu to go to hell with him, but she refused and scolded him.

In a mini manga in Fanbook 2, there was an interview with the demons who were destroyed by Insect Breath while they were in Hell. While the other demons were complaining about Kocho Shinobu, Doma spoke up and told them to let her go because she was cute. There was no doubt that he had a crush on the Insect Pillar.

Initially, many in the Japanese fandom believed that Doma had first feelings for Hashibira Kotoha and believed that if Doma had not killed her, they could have become an official couple. However, the author Gotouge never intended to build this couple. When Fanbook 2 was officially released, the content confirmed that Doma never had any feelings when he was alive, and Kocho Shinobu was the first person to make Doma fall in love.

So Hobiverse has answered for you Demon Slayer: Who is Doma. Hopefully this article can help you understand more about the personality of Upper Moon Two so that you can fully enjoy the anime Kimetsu no Yaiba.
