Solo Leveling ss2: Manhwa and anime – Which is the peak?

by Wibu của Hobiverse on 10.03.2025 | Art Story

Solo Leveling ss2 has officially aired since January 2025, continuing Sung Jinwoo's journey after the resounding success of season 1. If you are a fan of both manhwa and anime, you will surely recognize the differences between these two versions. So do the content, drawing style, and rhythm of both really reflect the spirit of the original? Let's analyze with Hobiverse!
Call Solo Leveling ss2 one of the most anticipated anime of early 2024. The excitement continues to explode in part 2 with more epic battles, stronger bosses and anticipated arcs like Jeju Island.

What is the content of Solo Leveling ss2?

Solo Leveling season 2 anime starts from the Red Gate Arc, where Jinwoo leads Han SongYi into a gate to teach her about the harshness of being a hunter, but things quickly escalate when they get stuck in the Red Gate. The anime continues with arcs like Retesting Rank, Hunters Guild Gate, and Demon Castle, promising to take the audience to the dramatic Jeju Island raid.

Comparison between Manhwa and Anime

Content: original manhwa, anime adds details

Jinwoo is more “human”

Sung Jinwoo in the anime is portrayed with more emotional depth, clearly showing the internal struggle between power and humanity. Meanwhile, the manhwa focuses more on Jinwoo's actions and constant progress, showing the cold and power-hungry hunter.

Right from season 1, the scene where Jinwoo confronts Hwang Dongsuk's group has implicitly laid the foundation for this change. Faced with life and death, Jinwoo is forced to act in self-defense. When Jinwoo kills Kim Chul in season 2, in the manhwa version, he immediately turns Kim Chul into a fighting pawn with a cold, calculating attitude. Meanwhile, Jinwoo in the anime has regret and hesitation, showing the struggle between humanity and supernatural power that is growing stronger within him.

Another important scene is when Jinwoo stands in front of a mirror after the Red Gate raid, silently contemplating what happened and the number of people who died at his hands. This image emphasizes the conflict between his human nature and the power he possesses.

Manhwa, with its condensed storytelling through each frame, brings a more tense and engaging feeling. For example, Jinwoo exudes a cold, decisive look when facing Baruka – the boss of Red Gate, while anime emphasizes emotions.

Overall, the Solo Leveling anime has made Jinwoo’s character more human. This makes Jinwoo’s journey from a normal human to a “god” more interesting and meaningful in the eyes of the audience. This may be suitable for the anime audience, but the original fans sometimes regret the coldness and cruelty of Jinwoo’s enemies in the manhwa.

More details

Compared to manhwa, anime keeps the main plot but adds a lot of details.

For example, in the episode where Jinwoo confronts Baruka, there is a short flashback about his determination to protect SongYi. Meanwhile, in the manhwa, Jinwoo beheaded Baruka in just a few frames, quickly, clearly showing his coldness. Similarly, in many battle scenes, the manhwa focuses on Jinwoo's tactics when fighting high-level monsters, not showing as much emotion as the anime.

Or in episode 4, the conversation between Yoo Jinho and his father - Yoo Myunghan, was added to clarify Jinho's motives, while the manhwa only skimmed over it with a few lines.

Next is the scene of Cha Hae-In swimming in episode 3, which was not in the original, to portray her more gently before entering the battle.

In the climax, Jinwoo's father, Sung Il-Hwan,'s lines are changed to foreshadow the future. He warns Hwang Dongsoo that numbers will not help, as most will be enslaved or used against humanity. In the manhwa, he says, "Never set foot in Korea. I'm not saying this for my son, but for you. You won't be able to close your eyes even after death." to foreshadow his support for his son.

The most recent scene is Jinwoo's emotional reunion with his mother after curing her illness, emphasizing the main character's motivation and personal sacrifices. This is also a rare moment of weakness for Jinwoo and is necessary to repay him for his entire life-and-death struggle.

These changes make the anime more accessible to new audiences, but since the anime is inherently shorter than the manga, manhwa fans may be unhappy with the slower pace.

Drawings: detailed manhwa, vivid anime

The manhwa is notable for its detailed art style and vibrant colors, creating eye-catching battle scenes. The anime, produced by A-1 Pictures, successfully translates these elements to the screen with smooth animation and impressive visual effects. While some fans have criticized the anime's character designs for being "Japanized," the spirit of the story remains well preserved.

In terms of drawing, Solo Leveling's manhwa is an undisputed masterpiece. Jang Sung-rak (Dubu) created sharp, detailed frames down to every strand of hair, especially in battles. The dark colors, strong lighting, and character expressions in the manhwa have a dark fantasy feel, making each page a work of art. The scenes of Jinwoo summoning shadows or fighting Igris in the manhwa are extremely beautiful!

However, the anime art style cannot replicate the sophistication of manhwa. Characters like Cha Hae-In look “smooth”, but lack the sharpness that a warrior should have. Manhwa fans may find the anime bright compared to the dark, dusty atmosphere of the original.

Pace

As analyzed, anime tends to shorten or omit some details compared to manhwa to fit the length of each episode, or add a few scenes to increase the emotions and cinematic features. This helps the story progress faster, but sometimes loses the details and depth of the plot.

Which version is better?

In short, the advantage of manhwa is in the condensation and the essence of an invincible hunter. Anime has the advantage of eye-catching effects, adding details to increase the emotion and smoothness of cinema.

Solo Leveling ss2 anime is a worthy adaptation with extensive content and eye-catching images, suitable for those who want to experience the story through sound and movement. But if you love the details in the drawings and dramatic rhythm, manhwa is still better. Both manhwa and anime Solo Leveling have their own strengths. Choosing which version depends on each person's personal preferences.

Anime Solo Leveling ss2 has reached the middle, let's watch the next episodes with Hobiverse with the most intense battles of the series.
