In Re:Zero: Subaru "Wrath", the main character has to go through many painful situations both physically and mentally, even times considered worse than death. The power "Wrath" is an extreme form of outburst that comes from intense emotions and the breakdown in Subaru's mind.
Re:Zero: Subaru "The Power of Wrath" and the Price of "Returning by Death"
Subaru possesses the ability Return by Death – allowing him to go back in time every time he dies to correct his mistakes. However, this is not a gift but a cruel curse: every time he dies, Subaru must experience terrible physical pain and deep mental trauma.

“Worse than death” condition
-
Loss of faith: Witnessing loved ones die or betrayal causes Subaru to gradually become confused and doubt himself.
-
Absolute Solitude: Not being able to share secrets causes all suffering to be suppressed in silence.
-
Helplessness: No matter how hard he tried, he failed many times to save people, fell into despair and wanted to give up.
Sometimes, coming back to life to continue suffering is more terrifying than death.
Anger – The Motivation and the Abyss
Though he does not officially possess the Authority of Wrath, Subaru has often fallen into a state of extreme rage – a strong feeling of anger at injustice and suffering.
-
Expression: Letting his emotions take over, he recklessly attacks those stronger than him, like Petelgeuse. Anger helps overcome fear, but often results in a painful death.
-
Temptation: Subaru is sometimes tempted by the power of Witches. If he uses the Power of Wrath, he can become stronger but will lose himself, like so many others who have fallen before him.
Subaru is a testament to a man who is both fragile and courageous, who, despite falling down over and over again, never stops getting up, fighting for the things he loves.

Subaru's Times Worse Than Death
Arc 1 – Meeting Emilia and dying for the first time
-
Status: Killed suddenly upon arriving in the new world.
-
Psychology: Shock, panic, not understanding what is happening.
-
Turning Point: First discovered the ability “Return by Death”, not really deeply injured.
Arc 2 – Roswaal Mansion and Rem's Cruelty
-
Status: Killed by the person she trusted – Rem, just because she was suspected of being a spy. The physical pain of being tortured, betrayed and abandoned.
-
Psychological: Mild depression, beginning to realize the cruelty of this world. Loss of trust in others is a precursor to later negative emotions.
-
Anger: Not yet evident, but there has been an initial loss of confidence.
Arc 3 – Petelgeuse's Attack and Rem's Disappearance
-
Status: Rem was killed, then "erased" from everyone's memory. Absolutely lonely, psychologically broken.
-
Psychology: Crazy, disappointed with Emilia, disoriented.
-
Wrath: Anger rises, but it is also the time when Subaru learns to be humble and rely on others like with Crusch, Julius…

Arc 4 – The Temple and Echidna's Three Trials
-
Status: Spiritually "cleansed" through trials from the past, present, and a dark future. Faced with true self, with sin, and with the possibility of losing everyone dear to him.
-
Psychology: Gradually grow up, learn to forgive yourself, accept your weaknesses.
-
Wrath: Has a moment of anger when Emilia is killed and when she realizes the deaths are inevitable, but then uses it as fuel for spiritual regeneration.
Arc 5 – The Battle Against the Cult and Rem's Revival
-
Status: Unable to save Rem even after victory.
-
Worse than death: Prolonged pain, disappointment with the world.
-
Mentally: More stable than before, but there is always emptiness in the heart.
Arc 5 has just released part 1 and part 2 will continue in season 4 of the anime. This arc is very "dark" with many headache-inducing scenes and extremely strong twists, where Subaru meets his "self" again.
Subaru is not a classic hero. He falls – breaks – hurts – gets angry – forgives – gets up and then continues the cycle. Few characters have to “die” so many times and “worse than death” is understandable. They are pieces in the journey of spiritual growth as well as how Subaru learns to love himself and others properly.
Re:Zero: Subaru's "Authors of Wrath" have enriched the story and character depth of Subaru in Re:Zero. They are not just special abilities, but also reflect the themes of sacrifice, friendship, and responsibility in Subaru's journey.
