In the past, high-quality live-action adaptations of anime and manga were almost impossible. And Rurouni Kenshin, One Piece, and most recently, Last Samurai Standing are names that prove otherwise. Though few knew of the original manga, the film exceeded expectations and proved that even less popular works can shine on screen.
Last Samurai Standing: Success from a little-known manga
Last Samurai Standing, or Ikusagami (War God), is a battle royale film set during the Meiji period. It was originally written as a novel by Shogo Imamura and later adapted into a manga. Only 3 out of 6 volumes of the series have been translated into English and it has not yet gained widespread popularity in the West. Yet, Netflix's live-action adaptation has been very successful by preserving the core elements from the manga: the art of swordsmanship and character development within the context of a death game.
The swordsmanship techniques in the film avoid excessive CGI, aiming to create a realistic feel, close to history. Lead actor Junichi Okada stated that he wanted to convey a sense of realism, highlighting the action sequences while retaining the characters' personalities from the manga. This is what helped Last Samurai Standing attract a global audience.
Creative freedom in the adaptation
Often, changes in live-action films compared to manga displease fans, but Last Samurai Standing makes rather reasonable changes. Compared to the manga, Shujiro's circumstances are revealed later, and the film opens with the harshness of the Meiji period. This helps viewers easily empathize with the character and creates more tension for the battles from the very beginning.
Additionally, some characters are given new psychological elements and conflicts. For example, Shujiro's psychological trauma and the secret of Tsuge Kyojin are predicted to be important plot points in season 2 of Last Samurai Standing. These changes do not diminish the spirit of the manga but rather make the story more engaging and profound.
The essence is that Last Samurai Standing demonstrates respect for its manga origins without having to copy every detail. The film not only retells the story but also delves deeply into the characters' thoughts and emotions, while gradually revealing the mysteries behind the Kodoku survival game.
Netflix truly knows how to choose works, turning a lesser-known manga into inspiration for quality cinematic productions.
