Satoru Gojo is undoubtedly a one-of-a-kind character in Jujutsu Kaisen. With extraordinary power and a calm demeanor, this strongest sorcerer possesses an irresistible charm. Ever since Gojo was trapped in the Prison Realm in Jujutsu Kaisen season 2, fans have constantly wondered what that experience was like. Recently, the character's English voice actor offered a theory that perfectly fits Gojo.
"Interviewing" Gojo trapped in the Prison Realm
At Anime Pasadena, ScreenRant had the opportunity to chat with Gojo's voice actor, Kaiji Tang, and asked him about what Gojo was doing while trapped in the Prison Realm throughout season 2 and likely for most or all of season 3. Laughing heartily at the question, Tang speculated that Gojo was doing just fine in the Prison Realm.
"Honestly? He's probably doing better than all of us. (Laughs) He doesn't have to pay rent in there, you know? I like to imagine he has a small home gym, maybe a meditation corner. I think he's fine, living rent-free and stress-free."

Kaiji Tang's theory seems to be just a joke, and while the anime might change things up a bit, it's clear that the Prison Realm is not a relaxing vacation.
According to an interview with the series' author, Gege Akutami (translated and posted on X by user @soukatsu_), the Prison Realm is a place where time essentially doesn't flow. Therefore, basic needs like hunger and thirst are no longer major concerns.
However, imprisonment certainly causes mental stress. It's no different from torture, and the Prison Realm is much worse.
Akutami revealed that Gojo must keep his mind completely blank to avoid losing his sanity during the sealing process. This means Gojo can't do much else in the Prison Realm, which is part of what makes it such a terrible trap.
Gojo's potential torture is a trend in Jujutsu Kaisen
Many have joked that Akutami created this place to imprison Gojo. Akutami is known to have grown tired of Gojo, so perhaps he designed the Prison Realm to be torturous as a way to "get back" at his own character.
And in Jujutsu Kaisen, it's inevitable that characters face extreme psychological and physical challenges. Gojo is special and needs to be isolated to allow other characters to develop, as well as to challenge the mental limits of a seemingly unbeatable person.
If, as Tang said, Gojo doesn't have to pay rent and can meditate, that might be a way Gojo copes with loneliness. It's highly likely that he has to use all of his superhuman Cursed Energy control and mental fortitude to maintain his sanity, turning isolation into a forced "vacation" that could still be an opportunity for self-improvement, however small.
Of course, that's what we hope. Perhaps it's not as rosy as Tang said. But if Gojo appeared and lied that he had a wonderful vacation, everyone would probably believe him.
The event of Gojo being trapped in the Prison Realm is a major turning point, paving the way for important developments in the Jujutsu world and pushing other characters into leadership positions in the fight against evil. Despite his absence, his shadow and influence still cast a pall over the entire storyline. Fans are still eagerly awaiting the moment he is freed to witness the strongest sorcerer on the planet return to the battlefield.
