After a long wait, the anime Maou 2099 - adapted from the famous light novel of the same name - has finally been revealed with the first teaser image at the Aniplex Online Fest 2023 event, providing the first look at the cyberpunk graphic style and magical, mystical atmosphere.

The light novel Maou 2099 is a work by author Daigo Murasaki and artist Kureta, and won the Grand Prize at the 33rd Fantasia Taisho competition with more than 1,000 entries. The series is published by Fujimi Fantasia Bunko, with an English release by Yen Press.
"Hollow" – the haunting opening song for Maou 2099
Singer Shiyui has officially released the music video for “Hollow” – the opening theme song of the anime Maou 2099 – on her YouTube channel. The dark rock track was composed, written, and arranged by Keina Suda. Shiyui shared that she performed the song with all her energy, as a “hymn” dedicated to the rebirth of Demon King Veltol.
“In this cold, unreasonably cold space, amidst the heavy rain, how will the forgotten souls sing? I sang with all the emotions that music can convey,” she shared.
The song was released digitally on October 13, and the CD version was available on November 27, 2024.
Unique Storyline: Magic Meets Technology in the Year 2099
The world of Maou 2099 is no longer Earth as we know it. The story is set in the future in the year 2099, where the world has entered a cutting-edge technological era with skyscrapers, artificial intelligence, and modern cybermagic systems. After the magical land of Alneath collided with this planet, an unprecedented fantasy modern civilization was created – where skyscrapers blend with neon lights, artificial intelligence, robots and magic.
The demon lord Veltol, who ruled an immortal nation years ago, is suddenly reborn in this future world. Demon Lord Veltol Velvet Velsvalt was defeated by the hero Gram and slept for 500 years. When he awoke in the year 2099, Veltol found that his world had merged with Earth, creating a cyberpunk society where magic and technology blended together.
Although he is a “remnant of the past”, Veltol is not swallowed by the times, but on the contrary, with unchanged ambition, he decides to conquer that brilliant modern civilization once again. Veltol not only fights enemies of the past but also has to confront new technological forces – corporations, organizations that control magic with machines, and modern heroes with equally dangerous thinking and power. Together with his loyal subordinate Machina and hacker Takahashi, Veltol begins his journey to restore power and conquer the new world.
