The city survives on fear
Monstropolis, a city that exists parallel to the human world, is a training ground for terrifying monsters . The city's energy source is not generated by the sun, wind or water like our world, but is maintained by the screams of children. The louder the scream, the greater the energy collected.

The place in charge of collecting energy is the Monster Company, the employees here are known as "scarers". They will venture into the children's bedrooms and try to scare them to get their screams. “Scarers” will enter the human world through a special door, then they will appear from the closet door.
Monsters believe that children are extremely dangerous and poisonous creatures, and anyone who touches them will die immediately. So the task of collecting energy is only for those who are agile and brave.
However, collecting screams is becoming more and more difficult because the children are becoming more fearless and harder to scare. Company President Henry J. Waternoose III had a headache finding a way to solve this problem. The company's top "scarers" couple are James P. Sullivan (Sulley) and close friend Mike Wazowski. The two have a feud with a chameleon monster named Randall Boggs.

A chance encounter between Sulley and a human girl
After work, Sulley accidentally discovered that Randall had left a special door on the scare floor. Out of curiosity, he walked through the door. Unfortunately, a human girl sneaked through the door and ran into the company, scaring Sulley to death and trying everything to escape. Sulley tried to bring her back but was unsuccessful. At that time, Randall came to return the door to storage, so he hid her in a bag.

Sulley went to his close friend Mike hoping to help. However, the two accidentally let the girl run out, causing chaos at the restaurant and around the city. Children Detection Agent (CDA) staff were ordered to blockade the city to search for the girl.

Mike and Sulley were lucky to escape CDA's pursuit. While running away, a series of funny and sad situations happened, thanks to which the two realized that the girl was not as dangerous as the monster thought. Sulley named the baby girl "Boo".
Falling into Randall's trap
Sulley and Mike try to bring the disguised girl to the company with the aim of finding a door to return Boo to her world. Randall discovered the girl in the factory so he tried to kidnap Boo. Ironically, Randall ends up arresting Mike by mistake.

In the secret basement, the evil chameleon revealed to Mike that he was building a torture machine called the Scream Extractor. The machine will still record screams without the need for scarers. The cruel Randall tied Mike tightly to the testing chair, but Sulley silently followed and quickly removed the plug, promptly freeing Mike. They go to Waternoose to report Randall's plot. The two were extremely surprised to learn that Waternoose and Randall had been working together for a long time. They were banished to the cold Himalayas.

Learn to forgive each other's mistakes
The two monsters were shown by the snow monster Yeti how to return to the factory through a village at the foot of the mountain. Sulley wanted Mike to accompany him but was refused because Mike was too disappointed by the previous conflicts. Sulley returned to the factory alone and successfully rescued Boo from the Scream Extractor.
Randall immediately chased after him to steal Boo back. Sulley met Mike while running away. Mike kept on apologizing for his misbehavior, but he accidentally helped Sulley defeat Randall.
Following Randall's intense pursuit, they had to jump onto the doors to escape into the archives. Sulley and Mike were surprised to discover a huge network with millions of cabinet doors stored here. Boo's laughter accidentally activates the chain, making the monsters' escape even more dramatic.

Sullivan and Randall were in a fight to the death. When he lost and was about to fall out the door, little Boo overcame his fear and used a baseball bat to knock "Boong...Boong..." on Randall's head. Randall was thrown into a door where a mother and son lived. The mother used a shovel to beat him to a pulp.
All mistakes aside, Sully and Mike work together once again. Mike is in charge of distracting the CDA while Sully takes Boo back to the human world. Once again, he was chased by Waternoose.
During the argument, Waternoose accidentally revealed his and Randall's plan, which was to kidnap children and use the Scream Extractor to restore the company's business, ending the energy crisis. The CDA appears and arrests Waternoose after hearing his confession. Boo finally returned home, the door connecting to her room was also crushed.

The ending of the movie Monster Training Institute
Later, Sulley became the director of the Monster Company, he outlined a new plan and successfully ended the energy crisis. Now monsters enter children's bedrooms to make them laugh because the energy from a smile is 10 times greater than a scream.
Mike surprisingly revealed to Sully that he had finished repairing the pieces from Boo's door, with only one piece missing. Sullivan is keeping that piece as a souvenir. Once fully installed, Sulley once again entered the door and reunited with Boo.
